A Shia/Shiite-Muslim memorial flag showing conjoined Iran-Iraq flags with
images of Iran. Gen. Qasem Soleimani (IRGC's "Quds Force" commander) and Iraq
"Popular Mobilization Forces" (PMF) deputy commander al-Muhandis, both of whom
were killed in a U.S. drone attack early on 3 January 2020 near Baghdad.
Al-Muhandis' real name was "Jamal Ja'far Muhammad Ali Al Ibrahim" but popularly
known by his nickname ("kunya") Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis ("the Engineer') and
regarded as one of Iraq's most powerful men. This conjoined flag has a black
mourning border except at the right-side hoist where there appears to be a
flag-pole sleeve. One realizes that this is a Shia/Shiite-Muslim flag as the
Shiite martyr's name of "al-Hussain" is printed in yellow on the green stripe at
the top of the Iranian flag, and "Our Life" in yellow in the top red stripe of
the Iraqi flag [which also has the green slogan "Allah Akbar" meaning "Allah is
the greatest (god)"] on its middle white stripe. Soleimani is standing behind
and slightly above Muhandis. Al-Hussain was a Shia martyr who was killed at the
"Battle of Karbala" in Iraq in 680 CE.

A Shia-mourning flag showing conjoined Iran-Iraq flags with almost
full-figure images of both Iran Gen. Qasem Soleimani (IRGC's "Quds Force"
commander) and Iraq "Popular Mobilization Forces" (PMF) deputy commander
al-Muhandis. The top yellow slogan reads (in Farsi from right-to-left): "Hobbul
Husain Yajmaona" that means: "The love of Imam Husain keeps us together".
Husain/Hussein was the Shia leader who was martyred at the "Battle of Karbala"
in 680 CE, and he unites the Shia-theocratic leadership of Iran with the Shia
majority living in Iraq. This 70cm x 120cm conjoined flag has a black mourning
border except at the right-side hoist where there appears to be a flag-pole
sleeve.

A commemorative flag memorializing the 3 Jan. 2020 U.S. air-drone killing of Iranian "Maj.Gen. Qassem Soleimani" (commander: IRGC Quds Force), as seen being paraded near the "Imam Khomeini Grand Mosque" in downtown Tehran on Jan. 3, 2024. The white Farsi slogan is an alleged quotation from Soleimani that reads: "I never wanted to pick up a weapon", and a portrait of him is on the right side. A hidden flag-pole sleeve is at the right (hoist) side.

A flag bearing the portraits of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei,
the late Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani, and Lebanon's Hezbollah
leader Hassan Nasrallah, during a funeral procession, for Soleimani and nine
others, in Kadhimiya, a Shia-Muslim pilgrimage district of Baghdad, Iraq, on
January 4, 2020. At the time of the parading of this flag, Khamenei was still
alive, Soleimani had been killed just the day before on Jan. 3, and Nasrallah
would live another four years until being killed on Sept. 27, 2024. - AFP

An Iranian Basiji university student waves a yellow flag with a portrait of
the former Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force,
General Qasem Soleimani during a rally to mark...
Caption: Not really an
IRGC military-unit flag, but a flag brandished about by the IRGC's student "Basij"
movement; A yellow-field flag with black-ink images of 5 Iranian personalities
loosely related with the IRGC (Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps).
Left-to-right:
1: Imad Fayez Mughniyeh (Lebanon Hezbollah).
2: IRGC
Maj.Gen. Husayn Hamadani (looks like Mohsen Fakhirizadeh, but not because of the
uniform).
3: Lt.Gen. Qasem Suleimani (with his popular scowling mouth),
commander of the IRGC's "Quds Force".
4: filmmaker Morteza Avini (has his
trademark aviator glasses, and the white streaks in the hair and beard).
5:
probably Shaykh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr, a Shiite-Muslim imam killed by the
Sunni-Muslim government of Saudi Arabia (The salt and pepper beard and the white
turban seem to track).
This yellow flag carried at a rally to mark the
thirty-third death anniversary of the Founder of the Islamic Republic: Ayatollah
Ruhollah Khomeini; in front of the main gate of the University of Tehran on June
3, 2022. One slogan in English reads: "Khomeini's Blood Is In Our Veins", and
below it that same slogan is probably repeated in Farsi/Persian. (Photo by

A flag found in Tehran honoring the martyrdom of Gen. Qasim/Qaseem Soleimani, and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, both of whom were killed in a U.S. airstrike on Jan. 2, 2020 near Baghdad, Iraq. Soleimani was commander of the "Quds Force", a military branch of Iran's IRGC; he was referred to as "Haji Qassem" by Iranian officials ("Hajj" refers to a person who has performed the "hajj" or "pilgrimage" around the Kaaba shrine in Mecca, KSA). Al-Muhandis was a former commander of the "Popular Mobilization Forces" (PMF), an Iranian-backed militia group operating in Iraq. At the bottom of the flag, the top black Farsi line reads: "Al-Quds Qadeem Qadeem" [meaning: "servants (in the liberation) of Al-Quds (Jerusalem)" while the bottom line reads: "Ya Abu Mahdi Ya Qasim" [meaning: "Oh, Abu Mahdi (Muhandis) Oh, Qasim" (Soleimani)]. Essentially, this flag is paraded by Shia-Muslims in an appeal to the spirits of Soleimani and Muhandis in helping other Shiites to gain control of Jerusalem. A strict definition of "al-Quds" is "The Holy (One)", obliquely it refers to the "Qubbat as-Sakra" (the "Golden Dome") atop the "Haram al-Sharif" ("Temple Mount") in Jerusalem; overall, "al-Quds" refers to "Jerusalem". A facial sketch of Soleimani is at the left, and on the right a sketch of Muhandis - both of whom are wearing a black/white-checkered keffiyeh favored by Palestinian patriots. Between them is a drawing of the "Golden Dome" and beneath it a poorly drawn national flag of Palestine - at the left the red "canton" should be more triangular. A hidden flagpole sleeve is at the left hoist side.
